Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Q: How does this CPA fee calculator work?
Select your state, whether you need an individual return, a business return, or both, and any complexity factors that apply. The calculator looks up your state in FindCPA’s CPA Fee Index (built from real pricing published by firms nationwide), then adds published industry averages for anything the Fee Index doesn’t break out.
Q: Is the price shown a guaranteed CPA quote?
No. It’s an estimate, not a quote from any specific firm. Actual pricing depends on the details of your return and the firm you hire.
Q: Where does the pricing data come from?
Base state and entity type pricing comes from FindCPA’s own CPA Fee Index. Complexity add-ons (itemized deductions, self-employment income, rental property, capital gains, farm income) and the entity-type adjustment are informed by the National Society of Accountants published fee survey, adjusted for inflation.
Q: Why do CPA fees vary so much by state?
Local competition, firm specialization, and market demand drive most of the difference, with some minor cost of living adjustments.
Q: Does my entity type (S-Corp, C-Corp, Partnership) change the price?
Yes. C corporation returns typically cost somewhat more than S-corp or partnership returns. This is because of the added complexity of corporate level tax compliance. The calculator applies a modest upward adjustment for C-corps; S-corp and partnership returns use the same baseline.
Q: How often is this data updated?
FindCPA periodically re runs its Fee Index analysis as more firms join the directory and disclose pricing, so figures are refined over time rather than fixed permanently.
